Thompson's big break in the journalist world came when he was assigned to cover the Kentucky Derby. It was here he was teamed with the illustrator Ralph Steadman
His trip to Kentucky was irratic and drug fuelled! ( a pattern similar to this soon began to emerge in Hunter's assignments)
Thompsons article on the Kentucky Derby became more of a biographic account of the pair's adventure and not about the Derby at all!
